Coachella Valley, California. memorial to two palmeros killed when the platform they were working on came into contact with an electric power line. The crane was leaking oil and one worker was electrocuted while the other burned to death. Both were Mexican immigrants. Wallace, Louisiana - The Whitney Plantation, a sugar plantation that has been turned into a museum to tell the story of slavery. Sculptured heads on poles remind visitors of an 1811 slave revolt. Avigahil Vasquez Sanchez sister of anti-mining activist Bernardo Vasquez who was shot dead, allegedly murdered for actively opposing the presence of the Canadian company, Fortuna Silver Inc.’s Trinidad/Cuzcatlan silver and gold mine in their community in the Ocotlan valley. Residents opposed to the mine argue that processing silver and gold is water-intensive puts their local aquifers at risk. Standing with her in tears are the son and daughter of Bernardo Vasquez, Noe and Alejandra. Three others at the scene of the assassination of Vasquez were also shot and remain in serious condition. The HQ of the group resisting the mine is in her home.

Students from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) join other students and workers in a march to Mexico City’s main plaza, the Zocalo, to conmemorate the massacre of hundreds of students by the army in 1968. Students, workers, unions and community organizations also protested the proposed reform of Mexico’s labor law.
