London is hit by smog and high pollution levels made worse by a sand cloud from the Sahara desert. Vehicle emissions and industrial pollution from the UK and Europe have all culminated into the worst air quality of the year for the South and East of the country. Health warnings telling people not to take strenuous exercise and for people suffering lung and heart problems have been issued by the Environment Agency. Macdoel, California: Migrant Mexican farmworkers pick the flowers, fruit and runners off strawberry plants in a field belonging to Lassen Canyon Nursery. Workers lie on padded benches in a machine pulled by a tractor, so that they are very close to the plants and can accurately pick off the flowers and fruit. The work requires skill, and many workers are older and have been doing this for many years. They work for the grower for six or seven months and then leave to find work elsewhere. © David Bacon/reportdigital.co.uk
